Evaluation Question 7 - Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

With our preliminary task that offered us a kind of introduction to the equipment we used, and the process in order to create the final product. While going through the preliminary task I feel this is where I made mistakes and learnt from these mistakes in my final piece. I took time to improve my skills, and refine them into tune and this is the basis of my filmmaking skills.

Planning and Research
In the planning and research part of the preliminary task very little planning was done. Apart from the storyboard which was obviously the basis of the order of the preliminary task. I believe this was mainly a task to allow us to get an idea of how the equipment works and how the different shots and movements looked, and what sort of effect they gave. I feel that I have done a lot of research and planning in this final product in comparison to the preliminary task. I have looked into other films with the same genre to see what sort of shots and movements they use to create the genre effects they need, and therefore we have used some of these shots to do this also the lighting and the position of the camera. When creating ideas we all had our own and all wanted them to work. Firstly we couldn’t pick a genre to use, that was the first problem so we seeked help and got told a genre but then as we thought of ideas we changed the genre to make it more of a mystery which I found interesting to do.

Filming
When planning for the final product after doing the preliminary we now knew what the camera was able to do. After using a wide variety of different shots during the preliminary, for one we knew that the tripod was extremely hard to work and move the get the right angle when changing shots in the preliminary task I know felt more able to find new shots to explore and what effect they would have in the final product and what sort of attraction it would give to the audience as the audience was the main aspect here. When creating our storyboard and ideas, my head was exploding with different ideas to use and how they could all work together. Our first issue with our final product as well as our preliminary task was the quality of our footage due to the lack of light problems and the artificial lights were just changing the films colour, and the quality was not as good as we expected which therefore meant we had to re-film to attempt to get some better quality. This was the skill I was least sure about to start of with, as I didn’t do Media at GCSE so I was new to all the filming and how to use the camera where as the other people in my group both had done Media GCSE so I felt a little out of place to start of with.

Editing
This skill I was a little unsure about, as again I didn’t do Media for GCSE so I was very new to the software and the making stage. But now from doing my pre-preliminary task, preliminary task and final product I feel so much more confident and comfortable when editing, I feel that I could progress my skill more though as I still am lost when it comes down to the advanced facilities of Final Cut. In my preliminary task and pre-preliminary task I used more transitions and effects like slow motion and other effects where as in my final product we didn’t need to use as many of these effects, I think we used slow motion on one clip as it was tracked faster than the other clips which when on playback didn’t look right so we tried to hide this fault and it is unnoticeable now. While using these effects they have helped me enhance the use of these skills and how to make it more appealing to the audience as I say again the audience is the most important concept as without the audience it is pointless to make the film. In my future now I hope to make further developments in my filmmaking skills and to still make mistakes so I can learn from them.

Evaluation Question 6 - What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Evaluation Question 5 - How did you attract/address your audience?

When attracting our auidence we did this in a variety of different ways to help attract all different types of audiences.
This snapshot would relate to a male audience, as which we are aiming it at male and female but in this snapshot it is shown to just being aimed at the male gender. It is aimed at the male gender in this snapshot through the sports being one of the main pictures shown in this shot, and the fact that there is a male character shown in this snapshot which male's will relate to. I believe that it is important to get the audience to relate to your film in any possible way that you can, this may be by using any props, costumes and other mise-en-scene but I believe it is the most important part of the film.

In this snapshot anyone could relate to this, may be someone in the audience named Hannah would see a better resemblance to this as usually if your own name is used in something that you see you usually have a different view on it compared to someone who's name is not within the film. But with this snapshot we have attracted our audience by using just simple everyday items, such as a hairbrush and perfume, this would more relate to the female gender as it is more 'girly' items.

Evaluation Question 4 - Who would be the audience for your media product?

Evaluation Question 3 - What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Evaluation Question 2 - How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The social groups represented in my final product 'The Last Rose' are a range of social groups because the target audience for my film is a range between 15-30 year olds. This age group represents a number of different social groups; school, college, younger workers, university students and full time workers.

I believe that my opening sequence represents these types of people, as it is not childish, it is a scary thriller, creating a mystery which is very complex needing someone who can understand what is going on. The pictures I have used are ones showing the growing up stage of a boy and a girl therefore they are realistic as they are pictures of my brother of his baby pictures into my boyfriend’s pictures of him now and pictures of me when I was a baby to my age now. This I believe lets the audience relate to the pictures, as they are a real person, which anyone can relate to. Using names within my final piece also creates social groups of ‘Hannah’s’ as when you see your name produced in something you feel as sense of connection to the film, which creates another social group to represent.

We didn’t use actors/actresses in our opening sequence as we thought for the film this would give way to much away for our story line we didn’t want add characters in the first sequence as we didn’t want to make it more complicated as it already is, we were going to have the main character David (My dad) to turn the pages in the book and to film from his eye line, but as my dad had work we had to plan around this. We are aiming this at a teenage age so we used every day items that any age could have but we have aimed at teenagers by using these items shown on the right.

We decided to not include dialogue in this opening sequence until the last section of the film as we thought it was more effective this way, as with the soft music in the background gives them a chance to look through the pictures and to get a grasp with what has happened. We used a soft music of a violin to create a tension, this music could relate to any age.

This is a positive representation as there is nothing negative going on in my film; it shows the kind of genre I am aiming my film at throughout my film.

Evaluation Question 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Ident 2

This is our second Ident, we made this up on the spot as we made 2-3 each and then chose out our best. This being one of them.

This is the movement of this.

Ident 1

This is our first ident, we got the idea from my surname being Wright and 'Right' and therefore come up with the idea of The Wright Productions. This was made using LiveType which we found very hard to work with, and spent a lot of time trying to figure out exactly how to work it, we used Youtube clips and websites to help learn different aspects of the programme.

This is the movement of this.

Group work

I was not confident enough to work on my own to do this main task so i have gone with the group that I worked with for the preliminary task. I believe that I worked well with this group, and that the preliminary task worked really well and had a positive outcome, so with out main task we agreed to try and expand our media skills and try different things that we had not tried before so we have to put more work into it to find out what we had to do to complete different things.

I did the set designs and some idents, Leah did some idents and the soundtrack, Kirsty although due to medical reasons left our group half way through the project we have still credited her to the director as she did a lot of the research to start with and she created the storyboard. With all the pre-production sheets me and Leah did these between us. All of us did our fair share of the filming as we each did a shot then swapped and all chipped in and all did an even amount of work, the same with the editing side of the product as well.

Soundtrack

This is our soundtrack, we made this using soundtrack pro.

Titles

In our research we have researched the order in which the titles appear in similar genres to our own. We looked at many film openings such as: Sky fall, Argo, Dark Knight Rises, Taken, Inception, In Time and Black Swan in the thriller genre and in other genres to see the difference we looked at romantic comedy's such as: Love Actually, Clueless, Tangled and The Holiday. In looking at these film openings there is a clear that there is a distinct order that the titles have to go in, for example we have found that the main title has to go last 'Directed by' which surprised me and my group. So the correct order that the titles have to go in are:

  1. Studio (production company) - The Wright Productions.
  2. Studio (in association) - Wonderland Pictures.
  3. Actors - Vernon Wright and Carly Johnson.
  4. Co-producers - Hannah Wright and Leah Bridge.
  5. Artists - Hannah Wright.
  6. Technicians - Leah Bridge.
  7. Producer - The Wright Productions.
  8. Director -  Kirsty Bennett.

Filming day 2

Filming day 2 came in out favour much more than day 1. The lighting seemed to have improved much more it was sunny outside! We struggled to get the camera in the correct place to have it at the right angle. In the end one of my group memebers had to put it between her legs and piviot around on the swivel chair wheels; which actually worked.

Change of characters

When starting to film we found lots of items of my own with my name on it, Hannah. With this we thought of using the name Hannah as the loved ones name as we have objects with this on. We believed that this would make our film more effective. So we have changed David's girlfriends name from Amanda to Hannah.

Filming day 1

Filming day 1 didn't go to plan. We had all planned to be at my house at a certain time, but one of the group members couldn't get there at that time, so we started late afternoon when she got there but then the other group memeber had to be at work in around 2 hours, so we were very limited on time. It took us a long time to set the pictures up on the wall the way we wanted them to have them evenly spaced out and where the light was hitting them at the right point. We struggled with light sources as it was getting into the late afternoon and it was winter so out lighting was limited, and within the house we had very short supply of handheld lamps. So in the end we called it a day, and tidied up, and planned for another day.

Filming not used!

This is just other bits of filming that we have not used.

Tester shots

This is the room we filmed in.

This is another angle of the room, showing out diary aswell.
This is the dead rose we used.

This is one of the reasons we changed the characters name, as there was products with my name on it at my house so we thought this would be a better idea.
As you can see there is a hairbrush and a money bank with my name on.

This is a close up of two products we used to symbolise the items we did use.

These are some of the pictures set on the wall. With the light source coming in from the right.

This is mid shot of all the pictures in the set design that we set, and the pattern we wanted them in.
